Analysis: What Ben Gvir's Coalition Accusation Really Signals
Ben Gvir's claim that Netanyahu privately promised Europe he'd be dropped from the next government reads less like a real coalition threat and more like a campaign maneuver aimed at his own base.

When National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir accused Prime Minister Netanyahu of pledging to European officials that Otzma Yehudit would be excluded from the next coalition, the natural reading was a real rift between two men who need each other to govern. A closer look at the timing and the audience suggests something more tactical.
Ben Gvir's statement came at a public press conference, not a private negotiating session, and it arrived alongside Likud's carefully hedged response that any government would include "the current coalition's base of partners," language that pointedly avoided naming Otzma Yehudit directly. That kind of mutual ambiguity, a loud accusation on one side and a vague non-denial on the other, is a familiar pattern in Israeli coalition politics when both parties benefit from the appearance of conflict without actually breaking from each other before an election.
For Ben Gvir, publicly positioning himself as a target of European pressure, and implicitly of Netanyahu's own caution, reinforces his brand with a base that rewards defiance over accommodation. For Netanyahu, being seen to even consider sidelining Ben Gvir may help reassure more centrist right-leaning voters without costing him Otzma Yehudit's actual support at the ballot box, since the party has nowhere else to go.
None of that guarantees the two men end up governing together again after October 27. But the specific way this dispute played out, in public, through dueling statements rather than a resignation or a formal coalition exit, points to posturing nine days before a vote rather than an actual rupture.
