Israeli security analysts are warning that another round of conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance is effectively inevitable absent a diplomatic breakthrough, The Times of Israel reported, as both President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu issue increasingly pointed warnings toward Tehran.
The warnings come as a third US aircraft carrier moves toward the Middle East, a buildup Washington has undertaken even as both the US and Israel approach their own elections. Netanyahu, for his part, struck a defiant tone, saying that "if Iran makes a mistake and tries to attack us, it will simply make the mistake of its life," while acknowledging that the timing of any new war before Israel's October 27 vote would be far from convenient.
Analyst Danny Citrinowicz framed the dynamic in stark terms: "Without a diplomatic settlement, the chances of escalation are very high." He argued that Trump is boxed in on both sides, unable to credibly declare the Iran file closed yet also unwilling to walk away without some further action, a bind that leaves military options very much on the table.
The underlying pressure points haven't eased. Iran continues to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the US has kept up its economic sanctions regime, and oil prices have climbed 46 percent since strikes in February, each factor adding its own incentive toward further escalation. Analysts cited in the report see a renewed conflict as more likely once the immediate pressures of this fall's elections, in both countries, have passed, even as Iran weighs its own dilemma between absorbing continued economic pain and risking a wider war it may not survive in its current form.
