Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a Channel 10 economic interview on October 23 that Israel should prepare for mounting international sanctions and look at cryptocurrency and blockchain technology as a way to get around them, according to a report by The Times of Israel. Asked whether crypto could serve as a workaround, Netanyahu said yes, and added that he had asked advisers to prepare an implementation plan for a blockchain-based system.

The remarks, made four days before the October 27 election, followed an announcement by Britain and 11 other Western countries of sanctions on goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, citing settler violence and continued settlement expansion approved by Netanyahu's coalition. Netanyahu also warned that US military aid "won't keep coming," saying conditions in Washington have shifted regardless of anything Israel does.

A senior Israeli economic official, quoted by Channel 12, pushed back hard on the idea, saying "the idea will certainly not achieve its goal. Even talking about it could harm the economy."

Opposition figures seized on the comments. Yair Lapid and Yair Golan both argued the remarks show Netanyahu's own policies have left Israel internationally isolated, contradicting his repeated claim that outside forces, not his government's decisions, are responsible for the country's declining international support.
