The Israeli military this week released a letter it says was written by Ibrahim, the 10-year-old son of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, at the start of the Gaza war, timed to mark two years since Sinwar's death, The Times of Israel reported. The IDF said the letter was recovered by soldiers in 2024 and, per its own translation, includes the line "I want to hold a Kalashnikov, and shoot Jews," alongside childlike drawings of weapons and military equipment.

The letter is also, by the military's own account, the writing of a child missing his father: it includes the lines "when will you come back and sleep with your arms around me? I am constantly making pistols, tanks, and Kalashnikovs out of paper and cardboard," and closes with "my Lord, I wish the war would end and that I see you well."

The IDF framed the letter as evidence that "Sinwar's murderous ideology is reflected in the upbringing of his children," presenting it as a window into how Hamas's worldview is transmitted within its own leadership's families. Sinwar orchestrated the October 7, 2023 attack that killed roughly 1,200 people and saw 251 taken captive, and was killed during an Israeli military operation in Rafah on October 16, 2024.
